Some spaces the central system was never meant to reach: the garage where someone works on the cars in August, the enclosed lanai that was screened when the ducts were designed, the addition with one undersized supply, the in-law suite, the workshop, and on the farms of Reddick and Citra the barn office, the feed room, the guest house and the storage building. A ductless mini-split cools and heats one of those spaces on its own, with an outdoor unit and one or more wall heads, no ductwork, and a thermostat that belongs to that room alone.

Rural properties have cooling problems no suburban HVAC company thinks about. A storage room full of leather or feed needs humidity held down more than temperature; a barn office or a staff apartment needs real comfort in a building with no insulation and a metal roof. Ductless heads with a dehumidify mode, sized honestly for a poorly insulated space, and mounted where they will not be blocked or knocked, are the answer to most of it. Can a mini-split cool a Florida garage?

Yes, if it is sized for a garage: uninsulated door, slab that stores heat, and whatever is running in there. It will not turn an open metal-door garage into a bedroom in August, but a correctly sized unit keeps a workshop workable and, importantly, keeps the humidity off the tools. Insulating the garage door is the cheapest upgrade you can pair with it.

Are mini-splits efficient?

Very. They are inverter-driven, so they run at whatever speed the load calls for instead of cycling on and off, and there is no duct loss because there are no ducts. Rated efficiencies are generally well above the federal minimum for central systems.

Do mini-splits heat too?

Nearly all of them are heat pumps and heat as well as they cool, which for a Florida garage or lanai means a few cold mornings a year are covered without running a space heater.

Can you do a whole house with ductless?

Yes, with a multi-zone system and a head or a slim ducted unit per zone. It is the right answer for an older house with no ductwork, a farmhouse with a tight attic, or a barn conversion. For a normal house with a sound duct system, a central heat pump is usually the simpler, cheaper path.
